A Sustainable Vision in Playa Ostional
In the lush hills of Playa Ostional, Costa Rica, sustainability isn’t just a talking point—it’s a way of life. At Guanavista, we take a thoughtful approach to eco-conscious development by turning Pochote trees from a former tree farm into stunning, functional pieces for homes and furniture.
The Beauty and Challenges of Pochote
Pochote (Bombacopsis quinata) is a fast-growing tree native to Central America. It thrives in dry tropical climates and has been widely used in reforestation projects throughout Costa Rica. On our land, mature rows of Pochote trees provide a rare opportunity: transforming them into meaningful materials through intentional design.
While this wood is admired for its durability and golden tones, the environmental impact of large-scale Pochote plantations cannot be ignored. These monocultures drain the soil of nutrients and disrupt the natural balance of local ecosystems. They leave little room for native plants, insects, and wildlife to thrive.
At Guanavista, we’re not only repurposing Pochote wood but also working to restore balance by reintroducing native species and creating a more biodiverse landscape. This holistic approach helps rebuild ecological resilience and supports the return of native flora and fauna. As part of our sustainable practices, Repurposing Pochote Trees has become a key pillar in how we honor the land and reduce waste.
From Tree Farm to Timeless Design
Instead of removing the trees without purpose, we selectively harvest and mill them on-site. This process yields rich, golden-brown lumber with distinctive grain—perfect for cabinetry, shelving, custom furniture, and even structural elements.
By using repurposed Pochote wood, we support a local circular economy, reduce emissions from transportation, and limit our dependency on imported hardwoods. Repurposing Pochote Trees not only contributes to our design ethos but also strengthens our commitment to regeneration and long-term stewardship.
Ecological Responsibility Meets Aesthetic Design
Each piece of repurposed Pochote wood tells a story—of the land it came from and the care taken in its transformation. At Guanavista, we aim to build homes that are not just beautiful but deeply connected to their surroundings.
Beyond Pochote, we also repurpose other trees that have naturally fallen or reached the end of their life cycle. These too become handcrafted elements that enrich both our homes and our community.
Rooted in Purpose
At Guanavista, we build sustainable living into the foundation of everything we do. Through thoughtful use of natural materials like repurposed Pochote wood, we’re shaping a future that honors the land and the stories it holds.
