It covers 510 hectares of land and an additional 8,054 hectares of marine area, extending along the beaches of Ostional, Nosara, Pelada, and Guiones, creating a coastline of 14 km.

One remarkable feature is the awe-inspiring “arribada” of turtles, a massive phenomenon that fills the beach with turtles. In the past, the collection of eggs was done illegally, but it is now permitted, with former collectors taking on the role of guides. The refuge was established in 1984, and while it includes other beaches, the arribadas exclusively occur in Ostional. Visitors are advised to adhere to the instructions provided by the guides to contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and culture in this extraordinary refuge.

When to go to Ostional beach

Turtles choose Ostional Beach for nesting throughout the year, but the most impressive arribadas occur from August to December during the rainy season. During these events, hundreds of thousands of turtles arrive simultaneously, nesting up to three times a month and laying up to 10,000 eggs in a few days. You can join special tours with accommodation and a guide to witness this unique phenomenon. The best time to observe is from 4 pm to dawn the next day.
