How to Visit Ostional?

Visiting Ostional Beach in Costa Rica is a unique experience. The beach is located in the Guanacaste province, and you can reach it by car from major cities like San José or Liberia. The drive from San José takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, while from Liberia, it takes about 2 to 3 hours. There are also guided tours available that include transportation and expert guides to enhance your visit.

When to go to Playa Ostional

Turtles choose Ostional Beach for nesting throughout the year, but the most impressive arribadas occur from August to December during the rainy season. During these events, hundreds of thousands of turtles arrive simultaneously, nesting up to three times a month and laying up to 10,000 eggs in a few days. You can join special tours with accommodation and a guide to witness this unique phenomenon. The best time to observe is from 4 pm to dawn the next day.

What to Do If You See a Sea Turtle on the Beach?

If you see a sea turtle on the beach, it’s important to follow these guidelines to protect the turtles and their environment:

  1. Keep a Distance: Maintain a respectful distance of at least 10 meters (33 feet) from the turtles.
  2. Stay Quiet: Avoid making loud noises that could disturb the turtles.
  3. No Flash Photography: Avoid using flash photography or bright lights, as these can disorient the turtles.
  4. Do Not Touch: Never touch or handle the turtles or their nests.
  5. Follow Local Guidelines: Adhere to any additional guidelines provided by local guides or authorities.
