The Arribada Phenomenon:
“Arribada” comes from the Spanish word for ‘arrival’ and describes the synchronized nesting of Olive Ridley turtles. Ostional Beach, a rare global site for this event, typically sees it during the moon’s last quarter. Over several days, hundreds to thousands of turtles flood the beach, blanketing it in moving shells and flippers.
The Biological Imperative:
The arribada is influenced by biological and environmental cues that are not yet fully understood. Scientists believe this synchronization has evolutionary benefits. By nesting in large groups, Olive Ridleys can deter predators, enhancing egg survival. The females return to their hatching beach, possibly guided by magnetic fields and other cues.
